My friend Joey Boom asked me if I'd like to speak to a historian/curator to one of the greatest drummers in music history. Uh...yes please!! Hailing from Buffalo, New York, Gary Astridge is THE leading expert on Ringo Starr and his drum kits.
I'm not much of a writer so if you want to find out more about Astridge in written form, Ken “K Bo” Biedzynski has a great article on beatosblog.com and honestly, I'd just be echoing everything K Bo writes about anyway.
I'll just say that Astridge is a really nice guy and I came out of this conversation with a greater appreciation for one of my hero's, Ringo Starr. I mean, Ringo is way more than just a time keeper and his technical ability is greatly underrated. Yeah, he'd play simple things BUT he'd play them the hard way. Check out how he uses only one hand to play a 16th note fill into the chorus of the song Help. And that shuffle he's playing is not easy to do.
