I've been following rDavidr on Youtube for a few years at this point. His channel is chocked full of DIY stuff, drum hacks, oh and there's the video that kicked it all off...the $20 Drum Set (video below). Not only is David a great Youtuber and drummer but he also produces "dope beats" (as the kids say). So dope in fact that he and I collaborated on the theme song to this very show. Yeah, he made that beat. So, it was only natural that he be a guest on The Pocket. David Raouf is the creator of the YouTube channel, rdavidr. His channel marries his love of percussion with his skills as a tradesman, by building, creating, and repurposing second hand percussion instruments. He gained popularity from posting videos featuring unique drum hacks he has picked up throughout his career. Though, his most popular videos involve him taking an old abused drum and modifying it into something fresh and new. He has a passionate focus to show that modifying music gear is easier than it look and not as scary as it may seem. In his spare time, he enjoys making hip-hop beats, play-along tracks, and creating sample libraries of the drums he has created/modified. Every year he releases a beat tape that showcases the drum sample libraries he has created. You can hear the analog influence in his tracks, which celebrate tape hiss and vinyl crackling. On top of that, when David is not recording himself, he can be found in his home studio recording local bands and rappers. That, and he's got a fantastic beard. :) I'd much rather be doing something than doing nothing.
In this episode David talks about:

Hi, saw your Ludwig kit purchase video and others. I could not figure out how to leave a comment there. I bought a 1964 super classic kit in blue sparkle from a damp garage for 10.00. Had the 22" bass with only one head and hardware, 13" rack tom with both heads, and a 16" floor tom with only 2 legs and the bottom reinforcement ring pulled off. I have since cleaned, polished, and reglued the reinforcement ring to the floor tom. I have bought the early 60's speedking bass pedal, spurlock hihat, wfl snare stand, and found a close to match snare. The snare is from late 50's early 60's with wfl hardware and the badge has no serial number. Champagne or very faded gold sparkle and the inside is bare wood. Biggest problem is the snare side reinforcement ring is gone. I live in sc and in Columbia sc there is saluda cymbals where they have and install reinforcement rings. I plan to visit sometime next week and pick up a ring. Well, I also buy cheap kits and make them better in some way and resell. I play many different instruments and have a home an old school studio with a yamaha 2404 restored console along with a taskam 24 track digital recorder and computer based stuff just to have fun. Look up randel art glass to find out more.
